Gypsy ~ A Horse Portrait That Tells A Story

The Healing Power of a Horse Rescue: Gypsy the Horse’s Journey and My Painted Tribute | Horse Painting

Why I Paint ~ My Mission

“For me, painting horses is about more than just capturing beauty on canvas; it’s about telling stories of resilience, trust, and transformation. Horses have a quiet strength, a soulful presence, and many of the ones I paint have experienced deep trauma or abandonment. Through the work of rescues, these horses have been given a second chance—just like we all hope for when we face challenges. I paint these horses to honor their incredible journeys and to raise awareness for the sanctuaries that support them.”

Gypsy’s Rescue Story

Shared by Gayle Rich-Boxman, founder of On Golden Rescue, Oregon - “Unfortunately, Gypsy's history is pretty much a mystery to us. When we went to get Jericho, the only info we had was that she had briefly belonged to the father of the person that Clair and Taryn were boarding Jericho and a couple of their other horses from. The father moved out-of-state and handed her over to the daughter, who didn't care at all about Gypsy... just wanted her gone. She was in a very small enclosed area (not even a stall) and looked so sad, as if she was already dying. They simply said, ‘Do you want to take her, too? She's of no value to us and we're just going to put her down in two days.’

I went over with treats and she ate them, but never perked up much. Of course, just seeing her broke something in me. I went over to Larry and asked, could we please take her, too? He saw the look on my face and simply said yes.

We loaded her first and once we got Jericho loaded, it was the first time that they met. They bonded immediately on the long trailer ride back to On Golden Rescue. They had never met each other or even seen each other until they were trailered together.

Gypsy's back legs were very wonky and she looked like she was in both physical and emotional pain. We paid the owner of Bodyworks to come out and do acupressure and whatever else Gypsy needed that day. Just after that session, she loped in the field with Jericho (as best she could) and during the two+ years we had her, her gait improved and her quality of life was VASTLY improved with great nutrition and being next to Jericho, her pasture pal!

I hope this fleshes things out a bit! I loved her so. From the moment I set eyes on her, she was pleading to have a different life than what she had been through, but had pretty much given up.

I used to call her ‘my unplanned pregnancy!’”

Supporting Sanctuaries: A Shared Commitment

My passion for painting portraits of rescue horses aligns closely with my desire to support sanctuaries dedicated to their rehabilitation. These sanctuaries play a crucial role in providing safe havens for horses that have suffered abuse or neglect. Through my artwork, I strive to raise awareness and funds for these vital organizations. Each sale of a portrait contributes to the upkeep and care of these horses, ensuring they receive the treatment and love they so deeply deserve..

The Impact of Art on Awareness
Art has the remarkable ability to evoke emotions and inspire action. By painting portraits of rescue horses, I hope to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges they face and the importance of rescuing and rehabilitating them. Each painting tells a story, encouraging viewers to think critically about equine welfare, the humane treatment of animals, and our God-given responsibility to care for these precious gifts from our Creator.”

Through exhibitions, online displays, and my Adoptable Art initiative — where 20% of each original painting sale is donated to the animal rescue of your choice — I share these narratives, compelling audiences to connect with the plight of rescue horses and consider supporting their local sanctuaries.

Through my journey as an artist, I have found an avenue to contribute positively to the lives of these remarkable creatures. By combining my love for painting with advocacy, I aim to not only celebrate the beauty of rescue horses but also to motivate others to participate in this noble cause. Whether it’s through spreading awareness, adopting, or supporting local sanctuaries, each effort holds the power to change lives.

💛 Let us continue to shed light on the importance of rescuing these incredible animals and supporting the sanctuaries that strive to protect them.
